Ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullah)
In the Name of Allah (SWT), The Most Merciful, & The Most Compassionate ❤️
A Brief Biography
Shaykh al-Islam Taqi al-Din Abu’l-Abbas Ahmad Ibn al-Halim ibn Abd al-Salam Ibn Taymiyah al-Hanbali was born in 661 AH (1263 CE) in Haran, a region now part of eastern Turkey near the northern Iraqi border. Coming from a family renowned for its scholarship, he studied under numerous teachers, including Shams al-Din Al-Maqdisi, the first Hanbali Chief Justice of Syria following Baibars’ judicial reforms.
Ibn Taymiyah had over two hundred teachers and, at just seventeen, was authorized by Qadi Al-Maqdisi to issue legal verdicts (fatwas). Qadi Al-Maqdisi took pride in being the first to recognize and permit someone as intelligent and knowledgeable as Ibn Taymiyah to do so. That same year, he also began delivering lectures. At thirty, he was offered the position of Chief Justice but declined, as he refused to adhere to the restrictions imposed by the authorities.
His education was primarily rooted in Hanbali theology and jurisprudence, but he also studied other schools of Islamic law and a wide range of disciplines. His vast knowledge extended to the Quran, Sunnah, Greek philosophy, Islamic history, and religious texts from various traditions, as reflected in the diversity of his writings.
