Hafiz Ibn Kathir (Rahimahullah)

A Brief Biography
Ibn Kathir was born in the city of Busra in 701 H. His father served as the Friday speaker of the village but passed away when Ibn Kathir was only four years old. Following his father’s death, Ibn Kathir was raised and educated by his elder brother, Shaykh Abdul-Wahhab, until moving to Damascus in 706 H at the age of five.
Ibn Kathir’s Teachers
Ibn Kathir studied Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) under Burhan Ad-Din Ibrahim bin Abdur-Rahman Al-Fizari (Ibn Al-Firkah), who died in 729 H. He also learned Hadith from notable scholars such as Isa bin Al-Mutim, Ahmad bin Abi Talib (Ibn Ash-Shahnah), Ibn Al-Hajjar, Baha Ad-Din Al-Qasim bin Muzaffar bin `Asakir, and others.
He was a student of Jamal Ad-Din Yusuf bin Az-Zaki Al-Mizzi, from whom he gained significant knowledge and whose daughter he later married. Ibn Kathir also studied under prominent scholars like Taqi Ad-Din Ibn Taymiyyah and Shams Ad-Din Adh-Dhahabi, among others, receiving permission to transmit knowledge from them.
Reputation and Legacy
Al-Hafiz Adh-Dhahabi described Ibn Kathir as an eminent scholar in Fiqh, Hadith, and Tafsir, whose works were highly regarded. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani commended his expertise in Hadith, noting his excellent memory and scholarly contributions. The historian Ibn Taghri Bardi recognized him as a leading figure in Islamic knowledge, particularly in Tafsir and Hadith.
Ibn Kathir’s Students
Among his students, Ibn Hajji praised his unparalleled memory of Hadith texts and narrators. Ibn Al-`Imad Al-Hanbali noted his precision, vast knowledge, and minimal forgetfulness. Ibn Habib highlighted his efforts in collecting and teaching knowledge, issuing Fatwas, and authoring beneficial works.
Ibn Kathir’s Books
Ibn Kathir authored numerous influential works, including:
- Tafsir of the Noble Qur’an – A widely celebrated Qur’anic exegesis.
- Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah – A historical compendium covering prophetic stories, Islamic history, and eschatology.
- At-Takmil – Focused on the study of narrators and the science of Hadith.
- Jami` Al-Masanid – A collection of Hadith from various sources.
- Tabaqat Ash-Shafi`iyah – On the virtues of Imam Ash-Shafi.
- Mukhtasar `Ulum Al-Hadith – A summary of Ibn Salah’s Hadith sciences.
- As-Sirah An-Nabawiyyah – The biography of the Prophet Muhammad, included in Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah.
- Al-Ijtihad fi Talabi Al-Jihad – A treatise on Jihad.
Several of his works, including an incomplete commentary on Sahih Al-Bukhari and writings on Islamic laws, remain unfinished.
Ibn Kathir’s Death
Ibn Kathir lost sight shortly before passing in 774 H in Damascus. Scholars across generations have continued to benefit from his vast contributions. May Allah have mercy on him and grant him a place in Paradise.
